The Tyco Electronics Foundation, the charitable arm of Tyco Electronics Corporation, provides extensive funding for projects that enhance learning opportunities for students. In addition to a matching-gifts program for employee contributions to accredited high schools, the foundation makes direct grants for programs that address a business or community concern of Tyco Electronics. Organizations (public or private) that support precollege math and science education receive special attention.

Tyco focuses its support on communities--especially Pennsylvania and North Carolina--where it operates. Past projects have included wiring schools with fiber-optic cables to allow rapid internet connections. Although the foundation makes funding decisions on a quarterly basis (December 15, March 15, June 15, or September 15), it gives the majority of its grants in the first quarter of the year. Therefore, the best time to send in requests is ahead of the December 15 quarterly deadline.

The Journal of Science Teacher Education, the official journal of the Association for Science Teacher Education (ASTE), has issued a call for papers for a special themed issue on teacher action research. Teacher action research and its products, including accompanying stories and intellectual narratives, serve as a mechanism for researchers to study the relationship among factors, such as student/teacher voice, social change, accountability, learning, and identity development. The editors are seeking manuscripts that explore these issues and share innovative methods for capturing and analyzing knowledge construction, learning, transformation, and empowerment in practice.

Click here for details (PDF). Manuscripts should be submitted online and accompanied by a cover letter indicating that the manuscript is a “Special Issue” submission. Authors are encouraged to follow JSTE manuscript guidelines.

During this expedition, offered by the American Museum of Natural History, participants will retrace the route of Shackleton and his men in South Georgia and Antarctica, experiencing the untamed grandeur of this frozen landscape that was the setting for one of the most heroic rescue missions in the history of exploration. The undisputed highlight of this voyage will be the opportunity to become explorers on South Georgia, an island that still rarely sees visitors. In a part of the world that can only be described in superlatives, South Georgia is truly spectacular: jagged mountain peaks (the highest, Mount Paget, risesto 9,500 feet), glaciers that tumble into the sea, breathtaking inlets, and on the beaches and cliffs vast numbers of mammals and seabirds, including four different species of penguins and four different species of albatross.
