Nearly half of all new teachers leave the profession within five years, citing lack of support and few opportunities for growth. To meet the needs of our newest science educators, NSTA is launching a New Science Teacher Academy. The Academy was established to help promote quality science teaching, enhance teacher confidence and classroom excellence, and improve teacher content knowledge by providing professional development and mentoring support to early-career science teachers.
The program was modeled on a successful five-year National Science Foundation-funded project conducted by NSTA and other partners. The Academy selects promising new teachers to be Fellows and provides them with a wealth of science-related professional development opportunities designed to meet the specific needs of new teachers. Academy Fellows benefit from one-on-one online interaction and mentoring with an experienced science teacher in their content area; engage in wide-ranging discussion with an online community of other Fellows and mentors; participate in web-based professional development workshops; and attend customized programming and general sessions at the NSTA National Conference on Science Education.
The Center for Science Education will create a national community of science educators committed to supporting succeeding generations of science teachers as they enter the profession.
