Advisory Boards and Panels

If you are a member of NSTA and are interested in serving on one of these advisory boards or panels, please consider applying this fall, when the application and appointment process begins again.

If you are a member of NSTA and are interested in serving on one of these advisory boards or panels, please complete the online application form. The application deadline is December 10, 2008. NSTA President-elect Pat Shane will make appointments through the end of the year and notification will begin at the end of February 2009. These appointees’ term of office begin on June 1, 2009.

NSTA Advisory Boards

Publication Advisory Boards

  • Science and Children Advisory Board
  • Science Scope Advisory Board
  • The Science Teacher Advisory Board
  • Journal of College Science Teaching Advisory Board
  • NSTA Reports Advisory Board

Charge: Review manuscripts primarily for a principal NSTA journal and occasionally for other NSTA journals, as requested; make recommendations to the Editors concerning publication of manuscripts; assist the Editors in implementing publication policies; provide suggestions as requested by the Editors.

Aerospace Program Advisory Board

Charge: Advise the space program project director; recommend various suggestions for program implementation; advise directions for future NASA/NSTA programs; react to proposals from NASA and other agencies; monitor projects; assist in evaluating projects.

Conference Advisory Board

Charge: Serve as an experienced resource to NSTA conference staff and regional planning committees and will maintain an on-going review of procedures and planning related to NSTA conferences and meetings.

Development Advisory Board

Charge: Review the organizational fundraising plan and advise the Board of Directors in the development of policies and procedures related to gift solicitation, donor recognition, and potential campaigns including planned giving guidelines. Develop strategies for the involvement and cultivation of major gift prospects. Solicit gifts at the various levels required for annual, restricted, and planned giving campaigns. Provide information on the environmental factors affecting fundraising among the organization's constituencies.

International Advisory Board

Charge: Advise, guide, and provide input on Association international efforts and develop strategies for implementing these international efforts.

Investment Advisory Board

Charge: Review NSTA investment policies and make recommendations to the Board of Directors on both short and long-term goals in accordance with directives provided by the Board of Directors.

Life Members Advisory Board

Charge: (Activities Subcommittee) Advise the National Convention Committee and help plan activities related to life members, such as life member sponsored lectures, first-year teacher reception, life member breakfast, and other activities of interest to or involving life members. (Trust Fund Subcommittee) Advise the NSTA Executive Director and Board of Directors regarding the Life Member Fund, review investment policy, receive quarterly reports on earnings and distribution of earnings in lieu of membership dues, and make recommendations.

Retired Members Advisory Board

Charge: Plan, coordinate and implement activities pertinent to Retired Members such as: sessions at the National Conference and other meetings, maintenance of an active volunteer directory and collaboration with other membership groups. Advise the Board and Headquarters on matters of interest and concern to Retired Members.

Science Safety Advisory Board

Charge: Advise NSTA staff on safety guidelines for all demonstrators and workshop leaders at all NSTA activities.

Special Education Advisory Board

Charge: Advise NSTA standing committees and NSTA Headquarters regarding special alternatives for members with disabilities; recommend special programs, activities, and publications for the disabled and teachers of students with disabilities; make recommendations to the Executive Director and Board of Directors regarding issues and projects related to special education.

Charge: Review manuscripts; make recommendations to the Editors concerning publication; assist the Editors in implementing publication policies; provide suggestions as requested by the Editors.

Children’s Book Council Joint Review Panel

Charge: This panels reports to the Science and Children editor and is responsible for the annual “Outstanding Trade Books for Children” list which appears in the March issue of Science and Children. Appointments serve on a calendar year, January 1 to December 31.
